The goal:
To read one book in the following genres: crime fiction, detective fiction, mystery fiction, horror fiction, thriller fiction, romance fiction, science fiction, action/adventure fiction, fantasy fiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, and western fiction. Specific definitions of these genres can be found in this post.
There are three options if you want to join:
A: Read 10 books, drop the genre you read the most and one of your own choosing
B: Read 11 books, drop the genre you read the most
C: Read 12 books
The rules
You may not read more than 1 book per genre
All books must be read within the challenge period
No crossovers within the challenge, each genre should have a separate book
Crossovers with other challenges are allowed
Audio books are allowed, graphic novels are not
You may make a list of books, but that’s not mandatory and you can change your picks at any time before or during the challenge
How to join?
Make a post stating you are joining the challenge, make sure you add which option you take and link back to this post. If you pick option A or B, include which genre(s) you aren’t going to read.
Make a comment to this post, with your name and the direct link to your sign-up post.
Review each book you read, and post a link to the post I will set up for that, which I will do closer to the challenge. A requirement of the review is that you clearly state which genre the book is for. It would be nice of you explain why that book fits well within the genre, but that’s not mandatory.
Prize drawings & graphics
There will be prize drawings at the end of the challenge. The prizes will be books, which ones will be determined when the drawing is almost there. To be eligible for the prize drawings you must have finished within the time restraints of the challenge, followed all of the rules and linked to all of your reviews (as that is how I’ll check to see if you completed the challenge). There will be three prize drawings, one for each option.
If you make me a graphic for this challenge, you will be added in the prize drawings! If you are already joining in the challenge, this means an extra change to win a prize, as you will be entered twice. If you don’t join, but make me a graphic anyway, you can pick the category in which you will be entered for the prize drawing.
Jaime has made me two graphics that you can use:

http://ffbookblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/genre-challenge.html
Do you need anything else? Or am I good to go? (In November...)
Thanks again Samantha, you were better than a teenager!
Hi Samantha. I'd like to join the genre challenge. Do you have an icon/image for the challenge that I can use? Thanks!
No, I don't have a challenge yet, I'm hoping the allure of winning a prize will get someone to make one, because I totally suck at making graphics. Should we not have one in November, I'll look to a friend with puppy eyes, but until either someone makes one or then, no graphic yet.
Samantha
Thanks, Samantha. I guess I should have read the "prizes and graphics" section. Kinda missed that part.
I'd like to join your challenge! I haven't done my post yet, but I did make a couple of graphics if you want to use them:
larger graphic
smaller graphic
Thank you for the graphics. You will be entered twice, instead of once, in the prize drawing of the option you choose in your sign-up post!
I'm definitely joining this challenge...I've made my post over at my book blog:
http://the-hag-reads.livejournal.com/4629.html
and I'll be working on my reading list (to be posted as soon as it's done). I'm looking forward to this (I am SO addicted to book challenges)! ;-)
Thanks for this opportunity!

I'll be joining in on the Challengeas well. Doing option c. Thanks! This will be fun.
Finally! Here's my post!
Great idea for a challenge! I’m going with Option A and my post is here.
Samantha -- Thanks for hosting what appears to be a fun challenge. I've posted what I plan to read at my blog - http://jottingsfromjan@blogspot.com
I would be happier if there were more choices, guess I will have to do optiona ! since I hate sci fi, unless i can find one I can stomach. I will figure out what I am reading when I come back from vacation mid Sept.

May I substitute a few genres for other genres? I do not like horror, romance and horror. E-mail me at intergalacticbookworm@gmai.com
If I can, then I will sign up! Judy
I meant to say I do not like Thrillers, Horror and Romance. I know that I can drop one, but I am not too crazy about these 3. Judy
I'm signing up for all 12 genres - gulp! I'll read a mix of teen and adult books.
my blog is

Fun, Fun
I'm signing up for option C, all 12. Here's a link to my post: http://dinosaurdystopia.blogspot.com/2008/09/genre-challenge.html
This looks like a really fun challenge! I am signing up for the 12 books choice, and I have blogged about it here in my Sunday Salon post!
Ohh I forgot to mention in my comment above that I made a graphic for the challenge. I am just learning how to use paintshop so I only have the one size (hope that's okay)
You can see my graphic here.
No, that's absolutely fine! I think it looks great! Thanks!
This is a fun idea. I need to read different genres.
Here is my post:

Sounds fun, I'm in! There are some genres I could use some more exposure to. Here's my post.
Hi Samantha,
Great idea for a challenge. As soon as I finish the Russian Challenge, I'll be signing up (I've promised not to bite off more than I can chew so, I need to get that one out of the way first).
In the meantime, I've created a Genre Fiction Challenge edition of my weekly Saturday Word Play, seen here.
I'd love to take part in this challenge! I'm in for all 12 and I posted about it (and listed my books) over at A Reader's Respite.
Hope everyone has fun!
I am participating and have my post up!
*smiles*

Hi there -- I just came across your website, and as a fellow book lover, I was wondering if you'd consider checking out mine at www.sarahpekkanen.com I'm a new novelist -- my books are in the same genre as Jennifer Weiner and Marian Keyes -- and I'm hoping to get early feedback from people who truly love books.
Thanks!
Sarah

What a great idea for a challenge. I'd like to join. I should have a post up shortly.
I love the idea of getting out of my comfort zone. Count me in.
my post will be up shortly with my list of 10 categories.
I'm looking forward to it.
Let me know if I need to do something else to join or if my blogsite will suffice: http://bookwormygirl.blogspot.com/

I'm in--I will do the first option and drop mystery (which I read the most) and western (which I do not read at all).

Interesting challenge, except there is no erotica genre listed.
was it forgotten?
I didn't see a new post for review links, so I pasted mine here. I read Testimony, which was my realistic fiction pick.

Nancy: the answer would be yes and no. No, I didn't leave it out on purpose, as I've chosen the 12 genres from several lists, these genres were the most commonly named one. Yes, as in I would have left it out even if it was one of the common genres named, because I wanted this challenge to be accesible to everyone, and I believe that erotica is a genre that is borderline. There aren't many good books out there in this genre, most of it translates to porn in a story-form. Even besides that, it is not something that I would subject children to, and as such, you will not find it on my blog.
Kelly: You are fast indeed. I haven't had a chance to post a review-topic yet. It will be up today.
Include me in for 12. Thanks for hosting. My first review is at

I thought I had officially signed up, but I guess not. =(
I'll be doing option C.

I'll probably only do 11 categories, as I'm really not a fan of detective fiction.

Hi, great idea for a challenge. I am going to choose option C, all 12. Although I would like to skip horror fiction altogether, that would defeat the purpose of the challenge! :P
I am tracking it at my Lost in Books blog.
I've read my fist book! It's NEVER TELL A LIE by Hallie Ephron.
Hi, can I still join in on this challenge? My post is here.
I'd like to participate, if that's still all right. My post is here.
I am joining, a little late! I'm doing option C.
