Bookreview: An Unthymely Death and Other Garden Mysteries

Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Genre: Detective
Published: 2003
Personal rating: 5/5
Yearly short story count: 10

A delightful new treasury of ten mysteries featuring China Bayles, Ruby Wilcox, and their Pecan Springs friends, old and new. Also included: a Texas-size roundup of China's best recipes, craft ideas, gardening tips, and herb lore. A great take-along to the beach or relaxing fun after an afternoon's gardening!

Lovely short stories about China Bayles! It falls somewhere between Bloodroot and Indigo Dying. I recommend you read it where it belongs, because there are several plot points of previous books that are given away in this one, because it's assumed you read those books already. I loved the herb snippets in between, and honestly can't tell you which short story is my favorite. Very, very recommended!

Bookreview: Bloodroot

Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Genre: Detective
Published: 2001
Personal rating: 5/5
Yearly count: 24

Jordan's Crossing....Just the thought of her family's Mississippi plantation is enough to set China Bayles adrift on a sea of memories. The sweet perfume of magnolia blossoms mixed with the hot, heady smells of the swamp. The house, perched on the banks of the Bloodroot River, a trenchant reminder of the bitterest, bloodiest moments in the country's history. And the secrets. The shameful, stifling secrets that have kept her away for so long....

Bloodroot takes China to a place where her family's legacy of silence is broken at last, and the past finally, unforgettably, speaks the truth.

I loved, loved, loved this one. It combined my passion for herbs/gardening, history, and detectives. What more could a girl want. Very engaging, very well written, lots of plot points to keep you on the edge of your seat. A real page turner! Highly recommended.

Bookreview: To Seduce a Bride

Author: Nicole Jordan
Genre: Historical Romance
Published: 2008
Personal rating: 4/5
Yearly count: 23

Spirited beauty Lilian Loring believes that love is too risky a venture and marriage is best avoided entirely — even if her unwanted suitor comes as deliciously packaged as Heath Griffin, the Marquess of Claybourne. The charismatic rogue has never had a woman discourage his advances. But after a show of resolve, Lily melts under Heath's sensuous kisses. Indeed, perhaps that is why she decides to hide out in the last place a gentleman would look for a lady: a house of scandalous repute.

In bold pursuit, Heath discovers his enchanting spitfire cheerfully instructing the demimonde in the art of deportment and manners. Now the thrill of the chase is exceeded only by his powerful need to possess Lily as his bride. For Heath, victory in their game of passion means nothing less than winning Lily's elusive heart….

This book was hilarious. I greatly enjoyed reading it, and found it to be the best book in the Courtship War series as of yet. I greatly recommend this one. Very funny, very romantic!

Bookreview: To Bed a Beauty

Author: Nicole Jordan
Genre: Historical Romance
Published: 2008
Personal rating: 3.5/5
Yearly count: 22

Clever and charming Roslyn Loring, the middle child of three beautiful, independent sisters, knows that true happiness lies in a marriage of the heart – and she has hers set on a love-match with a neighboring earl. Yet her sharp mind has observed an undeniable truth: Gentlemen lavish passion on their mistresses, not their wives. Roslyn realizes that to win her future husband's devotion, she must learn the secrets of kindling a gentleman's ardor. Fortunately, she finds a willing tutor in Drew Moncrief, the Duke of Arden, a notorious rake whispered to be London's most magnificent lover. If his searing kisses are any indication, the duke is the ideal man to teach Roslyn how to be the perfect mistress.

Drew begins schooling Roslyn while coolly guarding his heart. But as best-laid plans are thwarted by unexpected events – including a night of unforgettable passion – Roslyn and her wickedly arousing tutor discover how easily lessons in pleasure can become lessons in love....

I liked this book, but I found it was a bit slow in the beginning and there were a lot of clichés in the book. Now, I don't really mind clichés in my romances, however these were so poorly worked out that they annoyed me a bit. Still, it was a nice read, and a fitting second book in the COurtship War series.

Bookreview: Castle of Adventure

Author: Enid Blyton
Genre: Adventure, Children
Published: 1946
Personal rating: 3.5/5
Yearly count: 21

Close to the vacation home of Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack there is an old, abandoned castle. When they go exploring, it seems as if there are ghosts abound, but the truth is more sinister than that. Can they get out of this mess?

The second book in the Adventure series, this deals with the four’s adventure in an old castle. I found the beginning to be a bit slow, but once the story got going, it was very engaging. A very nice read.

Mailbox Monday & What Are You Reading?

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week (checked out library books don’t count, eBooks & audio books do). Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

The first book that came into my home is Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint by Nancy Kress. I got it mostly because of the viewpoint chapters, but upon leafing through it, I might get some real gems about characters and emotions too. I love this series, and I've got the book on plots too. If this is just as good, I'll be able to further my writing quite a bit.

The second book to come into my house this week is Daughter of Kura by Debra Austin. I'm still on a prehistoric historical fiction binge, and this fits right into it. It's about a tribe of Homo erectus, and I'm very curious about this book.

It's Monday! What are you reading?

Books I completed this week:

Castle of Adventure by Enid Blyton
TO Bed a Beauty by Nicole Jordan
TO Seduce a Bride by Nicole Jordan
An Unthymely Death and Other Garden Mysteries by Susan Wittig Albert
Bloodroot by Susan Wittig Albert

Books to read this week:

Continuing on with An Autobiography by Agatha Cristie. We're in the Interbellum now, and it seems as though her first marriage is not going to last long anymore. It's a slow read, but a very good book.

Sunday Salon: Read-a-thon edition

I’m too tired to have a proper Sunday Salon, so here’s a summary of the read-a-thon, as I wrote it while I was going.

Hour 1: I’ve started off with a bundle of 10 short stories about China Bayles, my favorite amateur detective. I’ve finished four short stories already, and I’m loving it, especially the herbal snippets interspersed with the story.

Hour 2: I’m working on the last short story now, so sometime this hour I’ll need to pick up my next book. I’m not sure yet what I’ll pick up, maybe the last in the Artemis Fowl series, maybe a romance. Still having fun here!

Hour 3: I decided to go with a romance, namely To Bed a Beauty. It’s intriguing, although it’s easy to tell the Duke is falling in love, even though he has no clue himself. Still, a fun, light read.

Hour 4: Still reading To Bed a Beauty, which is moving a bit slow, but is still fun. I’m also starting to get a bit hungry, as it’s around six now. Maybe I’ll go grab some dinner soon.

Hour 5: Halfway through my book now, and the pace is picking up. Although there are some clichés, they are to be expected. I just find them hilarious sometimes. I mean, please, the Duke and the Lady, caught in a rainstorm, forced to seek refuge in an abandoned cottage. Sound familiar anyone? (Can you tell I’m getting to be a bit sarcastic after a few hours of reading?)

Hour 6: I’m eating pizza with one hand now, and holding my book with the other. I can’t put it down, as it’s very engaging at the moment. Still having an enormous amount of fun!

Hour 7: I’m almost at the end of my book now, can’t wait to see how it ends. Had a lovely dinner, but I’m stuffed right now. Although I expect the snacks to come out in a few hours, when it’s nearing midnight here.

Hour 8: I finished To Bed a Beauty and I’m now reading the last book in the Courtship War series: To Seduce a Bride. It has an interesting premise.
After 8 hours of reading I’m beginning to feel the strain. My mind is wandering a lot more than earlier today, and it’s not helping that it’s ten in the evening here, and everything is dark. Still, I am having fun.

Hour 9: I’m enjoying this book immensely, far more than the previous one. It’s simply hilarious, but also heartwarming. I’m still tired, if I’m still feeling this way in an hour, I think it’s time to bring out the energy drink to pep me up a bit.

Hour 10: Still loving my book, even though my eyes are getting a bit heavy. I’m trying to keep awake with a cup of tea, but if that fails, I’ll go grab my energy drink.

Hour 11: I seem to be more awake after the brief dip I had. Maybe it was the energy drink, maybe something else, but I feel much more alert. My book is still captivating, and I’m hoping to finish it this hour.

Hour 12: I just finised To Seduce a Bride, and now I’m going to read Castle of Adventure. It’s a light read, but a mystery so it should also be engaging. We’re already half-way, which is pretty weird, but fun! Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

Hour 13: Castle of Adventure was a good pick for this time at night. It’s a light read, which is just what I needed right now. As usual when I’m reading in the wee hours of the morning, I feel the urge to put on some music, however, the whole house (no, the whole neighborhood) is asleep. So, not a good idea to put my favorite music on at levels which will wake them for sure! The clock just went back an hour, so it's once again 2 AM. Weird!

Hour 14: Castle of adventure had a bit of a ghost-story feel to it in the beginning, although now it’s really an adventure story. I made some popcorn to go with it, the perfect duo! Wide awake now.

Hour 15: Finished Castle of Adventure, which was a good read. I’m now going to start Bloodroot, to which I’ve been looking forward to for the past few hours.

Hour 16: Bloodroot starts of very intruiging. Can’t wait to read further

Hour 17: Bloodroot offers an intriguing look into China’s background, something we haven’t seen before. It’s also shaping up to be a mystery with multiple mysteries inside it, from old family secrets, to land deeds, to possible murder. Quite an interesting read. I’m still awake, although I am tired. Both at the same time, which is always a bit weird, but very normal for the read-a-thon.

Hour 18: Getting closer to the end of my book now, and the tension is really cranked up. Maybe I’ll get to the end of it in the next hour. Still drinking lots of tea, and sips of energy drink. It seems to be the magic formula so far.

Hour 19: I only have one chapter to go in Bloodroot, but the one of the two most important points of the book have been solved, not the other one. Still wide awake, and it’s finally light again here, which is definitely a wake-up call to the body.

Hour 20: Finished Bloodroot, and started with An Autobiography by Agatha Christie. I’d actually read part of that already before the read-a-thon, so I’m continuing from where I’d left off. I’m now in the middle of World War I with Agatha, and it’s enlightening to see how people viewed that war.

Hour 21: This book is slow going, has been ever since I started it, but I am enjoying it very much. It’s written like Agatha Christie is sitting right in front of you, at the kitchen table, just telling you what she remembers of ‘way back then’. Very pleasant to read. We're in the home-stretch now, only a few more hours to go.

Hour 22: I’ve ended part V War of An Autobiography, and will begin on part VI Round the World this hour. Only two more hours left, time has flown.

Hour 23: Woohoo, the last hour has arrived. I’ll definitely get to finish part VI and start on part VII, but I don’t think I’ll get very far into that. Still, having fun was what this was all about!

Hour 24: Finished! Look for the end survey and the wrap-up post!

24 Hour Read-a-thon

I'm currently reading for 24 hours. Hence the weird posts that pop up every hour. Don't worry, the blog will be back to normal after these 24 hours are up.

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?

None, I think it went very well.

The cheerleading groups.

5. How many books did you read?

5 books finished and part of a sixth

6. What were the names of the books you read?

An Unthymely Death and Other Garden Mysteries by Susan Wittig Albert.
To Bed a Beauty by Nicole Jordan

Bloodroot by Susan Wittig Albert
An Autobiography by Agatha Christie (in part)

Bloodroot by Susan Wittig Albert

To Bed a Beauty and Castle of Adventure are tied, but I'm leaning more towards To Bed a Beauty

9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?

Sorry, not a cheerleader. But I did find that I had lots of comments at the start and end, but there was the latter part of the middle where there seemed to be little cheerleading going on here. Not sure if that's a general trend or not...

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

Barring things I really can't move to another weekend, I will definetely join again as a reader.

A Musical Mini-challenge

Rood (translated Red) by Marco Borsato is a song I love to read by. It's not so much the lyrics (although I do love the part where he's talking about turning of the tv), but more the rythm of the song that I love. It's vibrant, no other word for it.

Re-reading mini challenge

I am not one to re-read books a lot, as I have far too many books that I haven't read yet, but want to read. However, as you've probably guessed from the picture, the one book I can re-read a thousand times without getting sick of it must be Pride and Prejudice.

It has so much in it. It has history, an amazing sense of what that time was like. It has romance, without the blatant chick-lit level (however enjoyable that sometimes is). It has Mr. Darcy, who embodies so much qualities that I'd like in a man. It has Elizabeth, whom I recognize so much of myself in. It has just about everything a girl could wish for in a novel, and I never tire of reading it.

Comments about this hour:
I finished To Bed a Beauty and I’m now reading the last book in the Courtship War series: To Seduce a Bride. It has an interesting premise.
After 8 hours of reading I’m beginning to feel the strain. My mind is wandering a lot more than earlier today, and it’s not helping that it’s ten in the evening here, and everything is dark. Still, I am having fun.

Comments about this hour:
Halfway through my book now, and the pace is picking up.

I decided to go with a romance, namely To Bed a Beauty. It’s intriguing, although it’s easy to tell the Duke is falling in love, even though he has no clue himself. Still, a fun, light read.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read

Open to a random page

Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week is from An Autobiography by Agatha Christie, since I am still working on that one.

It seems sad that having established ourselves so cleverly as 'the weaker sex', we should now be broadly on par with the women of primitive tribes who toil in the fields all day, walk miles to gather camelthorn for fuel, and on trek carry all the pots, pans, and household equipment on their heads, whilst the gorgeous, ornamental male sweeps on ahead, unburdened save for one lethal weapon with which to defend his women.
You've got to hand it to Victorian women; they got their menfolk where they wanted them.

What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What are you reading?

Books I completed this week:

Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie (see review)

Books to read this week:

I want to finish An Autobiography by Agatha Christie. It's very interesting to read, and I'm loving it so far. I don't know if I'll be able to start with my next book on my TBR list, Castle of Adventure by Enid Blyton, but I'm going to try and get it started this week.

Sunday Salon: Read-a-thon reading list

As most of you will know, the 24 hour read-a-thon, being held on 24 and 25 October, is fast approaching. I'm putting together a nice little stack of books to choose from during the read-a-thon, selecting books from my TBR stack that I think are suitable for the read-a-thon. This is my list so far:

Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox – Eoin Colfer

I always like the Artemis Fowl books, they combine tension with humor very well.

An Unthymely Death – ten short stories - Susan Wittig Albert

A collection of ten short stories about China Bayles, this will be the book I'll start with.

Bloodroot - Susan Wittig Albert

One of the China Bayles mysteries, always good to hold my attention. Last read-a-thon I finished with a China Bayles mystery, maybe this read-a-thon I will again.

To Bed a Beauty – Nicole Jordan

A historical romance with enough humor in it for the dead of night.

To Seduce a Bride – Nicole Jordan

Same kind of book as the one above, but this one looks to me to have a bit more humor in it, although you never know until you read it.

A Countess Below Stairs - Eva Ibbotson

Also a romance, but a bit more solemn than the two above.

The Celestine Prophecy- James Redfield
Heard a lot about this book, but never read it. I don't even know if I will like it, but should I try it at the read-a-thon, we'll see if I like it.

Around the World in Eighty Days - Jules Verne

This one would be a re-read for me, but I think it's such a great story, I wouldn't mind reading it again.

Apart from planning on what to read, I also planned a bit on what to eat. As snacks go, I'm going for popcorn, cucumber, and something with chocolate, maybe chocolate raisins. I always drink tea, haven't decided which kind yet.

So, what are you reading and eating this read-a-thon?

Bookreview: Ordeal by Innocence

Author: Agatha Christie
Genre: Mystery
Published: 1958
Personal rating: 4/5
Yearly count: 20

While serving a sentence for killing his mother - a crime he insisted he didn't commit - Jacko Argyle dies in prison. Two years later, the man who could have supported Jacko's alibi suddenly turns up. It appears that Jacko was innocent... and that the murderer is part of the surviving family.

This book is brilliant, not only for the ‘who killed her’ question that’s always fun to try and answer, but also for the insights in the situation of innocent people who get entangled in a murder case, as suspects. I enjoyed reading this book, even though this book didn’t contain one of her recurring detectives. There were some elements that came falling out of the sky though, at least it felt like that for me, particularly an event at the end of the book, that keep this book from receiving the highest score. Still, a good book and I definitely recommend it.

Bookreview: Poison Study

Author: Maria V. Snyder
Genre: Fantasy
Published: 2005
Personal rating: 5/5
Yearly count: 19

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered a reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace, and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia. And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust, and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison. As Yelena tries to escape her dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and she develops magical powers she can't control. Her life’s at stake again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear!

I loved, loved, loved this book. The main characters are sympathetic, the story is riveting, the world is exquisitely build. It all just fits. It's also a fresh story, with an unusual premise. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, and Yelena's feelings and emotions felt real to me. I higly recommend this book, and I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Bookreview: The Inheritors

Author: William Golding
Genre: Historical
Published: 1955
Personal rating: 4/5
Yearly count: 18

The story that William Golding tells in The Inheritors is a compelling one, provided you don't mind the outdated ideas about Neanderthals that were in use when he wrote the book. Golding's Neanderthals are very ape-like. They can speak and use fire, but they don't make tools, don't hunt, and their cognitive powers are far below that of (ancient) Homo sapiens. We now know that those ideas are wrong, and that Neanderthals were far more like Homo sapiens than like apes. However, the fact that Golding's Neanderthals aren't historically accurate detracts nothing from the emotion of the story, in which a small group of Neanderthals has their first meeting with Homo sapiens, with disastrous consequences.

What kept this book from getting the highest rating was the language Golding used. It was very flowery and literary, with lots of metaphors. Sometimes it was hard to follow the story because I had to re-read things in order to get what Golding meant. Still, it was a good book and I recommend it.

My teaser this week is from An Autobiography by Agatha Christie:

"Such a poor little creature, deformed, only one passage, like a fowl." That phrase always fascinated me, because I didn't know what it meant.

Sunday Salon: Slow reading week..

This week I've barely read anything. I couldn't look straight from the pain in my ankle, and reading was the last thing on my mind.

I still need to write out two reviews, which I will do this week.

I almost signed up for another challenge, but I refrained. No challenges, expect for the Book Around the World challenge.

I've devised a system for reading through my TBR stack, which should get me through it in about a year, provided I won't buy any new books.

This doesn't include the 'I want to read this library book' list I have.

I have a feeling I'm getting more picky about what I put on my TBR stack or list, which is a good thing. I've got enough to read already.

My ankle feels better, although it's not well yet. So I should be picking up my reading pace again.

Look for more bookreviews the coming week!
